An October Issue

Architecture lays down the rules but design breaks them. While the structure may ground us and provide much-needed stability—it’s the intentional placement of objects, colors, and textures that shifts the atmosphere, allowing us to infuse spaces with character, emotion, and a sense of human connection. This creative interplay elevates a house into a home—where every detail tells a story and invites exploration.

ARCHITECTURALLY CURIOUS

Designing for Connection, Not Just Function

Photography by Enceladus Studio

Located in Caulfield—a suburb of Melbourne—lies a contemporary single-family home that embodies the idea that architecture is an experience rather than merely a physical structure.

Its design emphasizes creating a journey through the space—reflecting a deeper understanding of how individuals interact with their environment. This approach allows for the transformation of a home into a living narrative.

What is Spatial Hierarchy?

Spatial hierarchy refers to the arrangement of spaces in a home or building according to their significance and purpose—creating balance and harmony throughout the environment.

Thoughtful placement not only adds visual interest but draws our attention to key areas. It allows secondary spaces to remain supportive without being intrusive. It ensures that the design meets both practical needs and fosters emotional connections within the space.

A Dance of Spaces

In this residence, central spaces like the living room and dining room are intentionally located for easy access—promoting social interaction among family and guests. Private areas such as bedrooms and bathrooms are intentionally positioned farther away—enhancing comfort and ensuring privacy.

Delicate timber screens play a key role—balancing intimacy and openness. These screens allow natural light to flow in while also providing a sense of separation. A sunken lounge serves as a gathering spot and focal point for social activities—enhancing the home’s communal atmosphere.

Lee Ufan Arles—a private museum and foundation dedicated to the works of renowned Korean artist Lee Ufan—recently opened in the historic city of Arles, France. Situated in the Hôtel Vernon, a 16th-century private mansion—the building has been retrofitted under the aegis of Pritzker Prize winner Tadao Ando, Lee’s go-to architect.

Digging Deeper (Literally)

His two signature paintings are displayed in a unique underground space. At first glance, these artworks appear as large, sweeping brushstrokes on the floor, which may seem overwhelmingly simple.

However, when you look closer, you notice that each piece is crafted through the meticulous layering of color. This process requires immense patience and a keen eye for subtle nuances—transforming the initial impression of simplicity into a rich and complex visual experience.

A Thought-Provoking Experience

His underground museum is available only by appointment—offering an exclusive and intimate opportunity to delve into his 60-year artistic journey. His philosophy focuses on the idea that true art connects with individuals on a deeper, philosophical level.

During this experience, visitors engage with the artwork in a way that goes beyond just looking—encouraging thoughtful contemplation of the themes and ideas presented. The visit becomes more than a simple tour—it transforms into a profound exploration of how his art interacts with nature and existence—inviting you to reflect on the broader implications of art in the context of human experience.

DESIGNER PICKS

Things I’m Currently Obsessing Over

Maghsoudi’s Modular Cocktail Table

Inspired by Persian culture, the Taarof Table is a versatile cocktail table that also serves as a coffee table. It cleverly conceals storage compartments within its legs—enhancing its functionality. The name Mehmooni, which means "gathering" or "party" in Farsi, embodies the spirit of this collection.

TRAGA’s Drinking Glasses

In the spirit (no pun intended) of hosting season, these bifunctional glasses are perfect for their clever and playful design. Their vibrant colors add a lively touch and the durable borosilicate glass ensures they can handle both hot and cold beverages with ease.

Sellers’ Artio Floor Lamp

This lamp's twin cylindrical loops—inspired by the elegant curvature of animal horns—create a playful yet sophisticated vibe. Its striking design transforms a space with its warm, inviting glow.

What I'm Listening to in October

Poe Roman Clay by Portola

Everyday life holds a subtle magic that can transform ordinary moments into something more special—whether it's a peaceful moment in nature that sparks creativity, curling up with a book in a cozy corner, or a nostalgic memory that brings a smile.

I do my best to focus less on the spaces I’m moving through and more on how they are moving me. I hope your surroundings continue to surprise and inspire you in all the best ways—I’ll see you next week, my friend.
